God bless America, Maine specifically

It's just so darn pretty here these days. Warm and blue-skied all day, maybe a quick cooling thunderstorm, and then nice sleeping weather at night.

Some summery snippets for you of what we've been up to:

Now that I'm home I'm starting my once-a-week bread baking. This week, some super-soft whole wheat sweet potato loaves. Aren't they beauties?

I'm also working on a new quilt/ bed-spread for Skyler's bed which was moving along swimmingly until my sewing machine jammed and I have to find someone to help me untangle it and teach me how to actually re-thread it. More on that later.

The farm share has been ridiculously sweet for the past 2 weeks. Sweet peas! Snap peas! Broccoli! Basil! STRAWBERRIES! (the best I've ever tasted). I made a big batch of pesto with the basil and tossed it with a potato salad for the 4th (with burgers, brats, fruit salad and a blueberry/strawberry pie... how very american). The peas are delicious in the huge salads we have every night.

Biking, swimming, and running daily. Sunshine. Feeling great.

Here are photos from a play date yesterday at the Carvers. My badass friend Sandi built this playset. From scratch. By herself. Skyler is in awe of it (and of Sandi). How lucky we are to have this a few miles away, better than ANY local playground.

The kids watering Suzanne's veggies. Or rather, tramping them and soaking each other. Suzanne was very forgiving about it. (Forgive Reed's Damon shirt... he's now a Yankee as you may know. Just trying to dress the kids in holiday colors.)

We talked about going to the Bangor fireworks, but Skyler remembered the traumatic experience from last year (way too loud for her; we had to run away with her screaming all the way to the car). She said "I think I'd like to maybe go see the fireworks when I'm six." So, three more years.

You people from far away really need to consider coming to visit Maine in the summer.

I would love to come visit Maine and see the beauties it has to offer. I, too, am in awe of your friend who made that superbad playset! Sounds like you had a great 4th. Happy Summer and lazy days of no working.
