Introducing....

The newest member of our family:  Jackson Emerson Thoreau Lou Alcindor Manhart.
                                                                 JACKSON
Jackson is a 5 or 6 month old shepherd/ lab mix that we adopted from a rescue group in Bath, Maine.  He was found in North Carolina as a 2-month old stray and was saved from being sent to a high-kill shelter and now he is ours, and we are in love.

I woke Skyler up at 6:30 this morning and told her she was going on a secret surprise mission with me to meet a dog and see if we liked him.  If you know Skyler, you can imagine how her whole face lit up and she immediately started laughing hysterically.  We drove to Bath, a 2 hour drive, and when we walked up to the house and saw him in the yard, we both knew immediately he was ours.

He is a dopey, happy puppy, but also made me really happy by curling up and putting his head on Skyler's lap 10 minutes into the drive home, and staying still and mellow the whole way.  Right now he's chewing on his rawhide and looking very at home.    Just when I didn't think there was possibly any more room around here for any more love:  a puppy in our home.

Skyler is beside herself.  Reed is a little confused, but what he doesn't yet realize is that this 6-month old puppy is probably going to replace him as the naughtiest boy in the family.

Welcome home, Jackson.

Wow Emilie,

What a surprise!!Jackson is adorable and I can only imagine how thrilled Skyler is--and the rest of you too. I hope Reed comes around to the concept quickly. All of us here are excited. I can't wait to meet him.
Actually, when I think about it, I am not all that surprised--I know it has been in the works more or less since Super Dog Charlie died. I have a feeling that Jackson Emerson etc. will measure up. Love love love !!

Not sure it matters to you, but the human "Lou Alcinder" is (was) actually spelled "Lew Alcindor." (Now he spells his name "Kareem Abdul-Jabbar," by the way. If you get a cat to compliment the dog, that would be a really funny name tandem.) If you weren't an English teacher, I probably would have let it go...
